Handmade Stuka

Well, during the past few hours we hit a nice milestone here on Toys and Stuff - 500,000 pageviews! Terrific! Many, Many Thanx for your support and we certainly hope you've enjoyed what we've had to offer here on the blog.

And now on to today's post, this gorgeous - and big - Junkers JU-87 Stuka coming in at 18" (45.7cm) L x 18 3/4 (47.6cm) wingspan x 6 5/8" (16.8cm) H. I don't quite know how to classify these metal creations: tramp art, folk art, industrial folk art. I've seen all manner of these display pieces; cars, trucks, tanks, half-track, airplanes, fire stations, gas stations, etc., etc. They're made to appear as if someone cobbled them together from bits and pieces of metal hardware and sheet stock. These aren't tin -litho but are painted. Some of the pieces are soldered on while major components appear to be spot-welded. Spot welding equipment is not normally what you would find in someone's garage so this gives a hint that those people who build these have more resources at their disposal than the average hobbyists. But I could be wrong.

Their outlines are fairly true to the originals but retain somewhat of a caricature appearance. These may be the result of a cottage industry or they may be part of an overall toy strategy by a larger company but in any case they are quite nice and creatively executed. I started buying these some years back and featured a Leapers Halftrack back on 23 Oct 2010 which I have since sold. As my collecting matured these didn't quite fit into what I was going for and only a couple more were purchased - this Stuka and a Sherman tank. Eventually the two will be sold off as well. Anywho, it's a nice piece and we hope Everybody  Enjoy!  Viel Spass Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina :)
